Paid social agencies key metrics: five reporting measures

Paid social agencies key metrics need clear events, denominators, owners and uncertainty notes. This guide defines five reporting measures.

For paid social agencies, key metrics are useful only when each has a defined event, denominator, owner and uncertainty note. This article specifies five measures, not every possible paid-social metric, and they are not targets or England benchmarks. Each card needs a period, timezone, source system, saved query and version. It also needs inclusions, exclusions, accountable owner and uncertainty note.

What to take away

  • Define each paid-social metric with an event, denominator, owner and uncertainty note.
  • Platform impressions count displays, not people, and do not establish viewability or human attention.
  • Accepted business-outcome rate measures internal operations and does not assign causality to advertising.
  • Reconciliation match rates need separate denominators for platform-to-client and client-to-platform directions.
  • Report quality beside results; if a denominator, source version or owner is missing, mark the measure unavailable.

Platform-recorded impressions

Event: the named platform records an advert display; eligible population is placements in the selected campaign and export; unit is a count, no people denominator.

Impressions metric definition

  • 1event platform records advert display
  • 1unit count, no people denominator
  • 0tests and invalidated records excluded

Period and timezone: account setting plus extraction timestamp; source: platform account, campaign IDs, export and query version.

Include only approved placement scope; exclude tests and invalidated records if supplier marks them; owner: platform analyst. Uncertainty: delivery, viewability and human attention are not established.

Google's global impression definition says a count occurs when an advert is shown on Google or its network. It notes that only part of an advert may sometimes display. Apply another platform's own definition rather than transferring Google's.

Eligible interaction rate

Event: an interaction type named before reporting, such as an eligible click. Population and denominator: platform-recorded impressions eligible for that interaction under the same account, period, timezone and placement scope; numerator: eligible interactions after the documented invalid-event treatment.

Eligible interaction rate calculation

  1. Name interaction type before reporting
  2. Eligible interactions after invalid-event treatment
  3. Platform-recorded impressions eligible for that interaction
  4. Divide numerator by denominator, times 100
  5. Do not combine differing campaign types

Unit: percentage, numerator divided by denominator times 100; source: platform export and locked calculation query; owner: measurement analyst. Uncertainty: an interaction implies neither intent nor a completed destination task.

Do not combine campaign types whose interaction definitions differ unless each component is shown.

Accepted business-outcome rate

Event: a client outcome passes the stated operational rule, such as a non-duplicate lead accepted by sales or an order retained after the named cancellation window. Eligible population: records that reached the agreed decision point. Numerator: accepted outcomes. Denominator: all eligible records, including rejected records with reasons and excluding only documented tests.

Period: internal event timestamp and declared timezone. Source: CRM, order or finance query with schema version. Owner: client operations. Uncertainty includes late decisions, missing identifiers and rule changes.

This is an internal operational measure. It does not assign causality to advertising.

Reconciliation match rate

Event: one platform-attributed record and one internal outcome meet approved identity, event and time rules; numerator: matched eligible records; denominator: all records eligible for matching in the stated direction. Platform-to-client and client-to-platform rates need different denominators. Source: frozen extracts, mapping table and query commit.

Exclude synthetic tests; retain unresolved and duplicate categories; owner: data steward; uncertainty includes identifier loss, consent choices, lag and modelled platform values.

Google's conversion-data page says its Conversions column can include modelled events and depends on primary action settings. A difference from client records therefore needs investigation, not automatic adjustment.

Cost per accepted outcome

Event: finance-approved cost with an accepted internal outcome. Eligible population: outcomes covered by the allocation rule for the client finance period and declared timezone.

Numerator: reconciled economic cost in original and reporting currencies, with agency work, media, measurement, correction and approved overhead scope stated; Denominator: accepted internal outcomes for that population. Unit: currency per outcome; Source: finance ledger plus outcome query versions; Owner: finance.

Exclude nothing merely because it makes the result less attractive. Show disputed costs separately. Uncertainty covers lag, refunds, allocation rules and incomplete cost records.

CAP's UK misleading-advertising rules mean any public comparative or savings claim needs documentary support before distribution. Finance, advertising, privacy and regulated-product reviews remain separate.

Report quality beside the result

For every measure, show freshness, missingness, revision status and definition version. Government Analysis Function quality guidance treats quality as fitness for purpose and asks producers to explain data and method limitations. This article applies that discipline to commercial reporting without presenting agency figures as official statistics.

If a denominator, source version or owner is missing, report the measure as unavailable. A blank cell is more honest than a precise-looking rate built from incompatible records.

Before you act

  • Specify period, timezone, source system and query version for each measure.
  • State inclusions, exclusions, accountable owner and uncertainty note.
  • Do not combine campaign types with different interaction definitions.
  • Use separate denominators for platform-to-client and client-to-platform match rates.
  • Show disputed costs separately and exclude nothing to improve appearance.
  • Report freshness, missingness, revision status and definition version.

Common questions

What does a platform-recorded impression actually measure?

It counts when the named platform records an advert display. The eligible population is placements included by the selected campaign and export. The unit is a count, with no people denominator. Delivery, viewability and human attention are not established by this measure.

How is the accepted business-outcome rate calculated?

The event is a client outcome passing a stated operational rule, such as a non-duplicate lead accepted by sales. The numerator is accepted outcomes. The denominator is all eligible records, including rejected records with reasons, excluding only documented tests. It uses internal event timestamps and declared timezone.

Why might platform and client records differ?

Google's conversion-data page says its Conversions column can include modelled events and depends on primary action settings. A difference from client records therefore needs investigation, not automatic adjustment. Reconciliation match rates use frozen extracts and mapping tables, and uncertainty includes identifier loss, consent choices and lag.
